Medical and Counseling Support: Widow’s Might offers professional licensed counseling to help widows manage grief and mental health challenges. The organization also may cover medical support needs, such as hearing aids, and has funded multiple hearing aids for widows who would otherwise lack access to them.
Handyman and Repair Assistance: Widow’s Might may provide handyman services and may cover home repairs. The organization has funded car repairs and home modifications, including the installation of new air conditioning units. For special situations, such as a recent case involving a widow with high medical expenses, they organized a garage sale and arranged for a live-in nurse to assist, which also helped her financially by contributing to her mortgage.
Social and Emotional Support: The organization also hosts regular book club meetings and has expanded to multiple locations, including Prescott, Prescott Valley, and Chino Valley. Widow’s Might distribute informational brochures in local churches, hospitals, and doctor’s offices, making their services accessible to a larger audience.
Widow’s Might reported significant growth and demand for their support. Since last year, the number of people served has doubled. This growth aligns with local demographic trends, particularly the influx of retirees and an increased widow population following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The group emphasized the need for community support and volunteer involvement. They are inviting local residents with skills in financial planning, technical support, and security to consider volunteering, particularly to aid in administration and meeting security needs.
Widow’s Might operates on a flexible budget, relying heavily on donations. Their biggest expenses include counseling sessions and literature for widows. They work with a lean financial operation, where all funds are allocated toward widow support. None of the Widow’s Might team receive a stipend or gas money for their services.
The group is actively seeking volunteers with specific skills to address these needs and their presentation concluded with a call for support from the community.
As Widow’s Might continues its mission as a vital resource for widows in our community, they are working diligently to meet the emotional, financial, and practical needs. Support of this organization is critical and they deserve and need serious support.
